Back in the castle, her bed was enormous and soft, with thick quilts and an embroidered duvet cover; with fluffy pillows in silken pillow cases. Everything about it was comforting to the touch.

Now on the road, her bed was the floor of a tent, a thin blanket all that kept the cold at bay; even when they could afford to stay at an inn, the beds were small and hard and she often had to share.

Everything about it was uncomfortable.

So why was it, Estelle wondered, that she slept better now than she ever had before.

I think she could come to be happy in the castle but things would have to be different there. :|a As I wrote it, one of the things I thought was that, even though she grew up in the castle, it was never really her home. And it could become her home, if she came back to Zaphias feeling less adrift and helpless. I was thinking that feeling that way might be a subtle weight on her, one she didn't completely notice or articulate, but that losing it makes her feel free
