“Dammit!”
The curse rings out, Luke’s sword skittering over the flagstones. The gardeners glance at each other, but they don’t dare say anything aloud.
“You okay?” Guy runs up, sheathing his sword. The sun makes his hair shine like the gold leaf on the palace doors. “Let me see.”
Luke shows him his bruised, stinging fingers. Guy holds them up to the light, and for a moment Luke thinks he’s going to kiss them, like he’s a little kid.
Guy smiles. His hand is warm against Luke’s back. “Come on, let’s take a break. We can start fresh after that.”
