He stepped out onto the broken fields of Hod and closed his eyes. The smell of char was still thick in the air, the cries of the wounded clawing at his ears. The battle had been conceded hours ago but its horrors still lingered here.

Or, perhaps more accurately, the real horrors were just beginning.

He stepped forward and almost tripped over the corpse of a young man, clean face still recognizable, eyes wide open and unseeing in a terrified rictus of death.

The Necromancer lifted his head and said mildly, "This one should make a good specimen. Bring it."
