"Your son is destined for great things." The candlelight flickers as Van speaks.
Duke Fabre grimaces. "I'm aware of that."
Van keeps a tight smile. "You must feel proud. Your own son will usher in a new era of prosperity."
"My son will die."
"Sacrifice is necessary. The hero of Hod should understand that." The Duke stiffens. "Your son will be a martyr, and you won't spare him."
There's fire in Fabre's eyes. "You dare mock me, Major Grants?"
Van blows out the candle. "You are nothing before the Score, Crimson. I will ensure that your son fulfills his destiny."

I sheepishly admit I'm kind of fascinated with Duke Fabre. He's probably not a "bad" person, yet he's done terrible things, and is probably capable of doing much worse - the Closed Score said that the Kimlascan army would commit atrocities against Malkuth and IIRC Duke Fabre is the commander of the Kimlascan army.
I've heard a rumour that in one of the drama CDs it's implied that he originally had a crush on Guy's mother, which just adds this level of Shakespearian tragedy to what he did at Hod.

So yes. I don't think Duke Fabre was a "bad" person. He, however, was controlled by the Score to a great extent and could've done worse if the Score was not thrown off track.

It just kind of brings home the feeling that under the score, pretty much anyone can be thought of as a victim. And Van knows this and uses it against anyone, despite being a victim himself in a way. X/
Anyway this was very lovely, thank you. =D
