He didn't have the words to tell them what their acceptance meant to him. For his father to look him in the eye, clear and approving, and his mother to clutch fingers in his vestments and weep happily, and even his replacement to meet him with sincere, innocent warmth.
He couldn't begin to say how it felt: how it filled him with purpose and contentment, and finally started to heal years of loneliness and bitterness.
So he didn't tell him, and he kept up his aloof mask.
It was better if they didn't know, anyway. It wouldn't be long now.
