Once, when he needed a reminder of what he fought for, he simply went to the Lower Quarter and sat by the side of the road, watching people go past; argue with friends and oppressors; drink from their public fountain; kiss under low-hanging awnings. It helped him focus on what was important, and let him go back to his work with new energy.

Lately Alexei had not had the time to go, nor could the Commandant of the Imperial Knights simply walk into the Lower Quarter and sit on the curb.

Still. He liked to think he kept his perspective.

I really, really love the first paragraph of this. The game tells us he was just like our heroes, but it's still a bit of a shock to imagine this kind of thing, and so. ;; So sadly-easy to see where he went astray.

Flynn really is lucky that he has kind of a permanent tie to that life, to help him keep his perspective for real.

Flynn certainly agrees with that, I think. He never wants to reach that place where he can't justify going and he loses track of what's important. (Spoiler alert: Alexei does not keep his perspective.)
