The first bead he'd worn in his hair was nephrite- soft jade, bright and resilient. Its weight against his face was a reminder of her touch. It cracked the day of her wedding to Viscount Osborne.
He almost didn’t replace it. He’d had about enough ‘polite enquiries’ as to his happiness, and he was considering shipping the next official who annoyed him to the other side of Mt Roneal.
The gemcutter assured him jadeite was rarer, more valuable despite the slight reduction in toughness. Privately, Peony was glad to have a stone less willing to be shaped by the Score.
