It was not like he was trying to be a martyr and it was not for some selfish reason like wanting to leave a lasting imprint behind on the world so that he could be remembered. Luke had no such delusions of heroics.
What he wanted was just a simple wish: he wanted them to live.
He didn't want to die, whoever would truly want to, but he refused to allow Asch to risk whatever else he had left for a replica.
He had taken everything else from Asch. The least he could do was to give him a future.
